Something Special Bonaire truly lives up to its name. Diving the pristine waters will surely be available for generations to come as the waters around Bonaire have been labeled an official marine park. This park encompasses the whole island with over 5000 acres of tropical paradise. Bonaire’s marine paradise also has one of the most diverse marine populations in the world and an observant diver may identify up to 100 species in one dive. Among others, a diver or snorkeler may see plenty of tangs and damselfish, angel and butterfly fish, along with grunts, snapper, jacks, eels, stingray and barracuda. Occasionally the adventurist may find nurse sharks, tarpon, seahorses and dolphin, and nestled on the bottom all kinds of rays, anemones and coral. Not surprisingly, Something Special Bonaire and the rest of the reef is a photographer’s paradise and something the avid diver or snorkeler must put at the top of their bucket list!
Snorkeling and Diving Packages:
If I had only known of the beauty beneath the waves surrounding French Polynesia, I would have taken more advantage of snorkeling and exploring the waters surrounding the island. In 1988 I visited Papeete and Moorea for five days and found the beauty of Moorea to be enchanting in spite of my circumstances. The island is surrounded by a coral reef, which allowed me to walk and swim out to enjoy the beautiful waters and some of the creatures that ventured within. Although my timing was off to witness the humpback annual migration and the birthing of the new generation (July through October), I did enjoy the pristine clear waters and the warmth of the beach.
Rurutu, another of the Polynesian Islands, is well known as the Island of Whales, also attracts whales that mate, then give birth within the protection of the surrounding coral reef. Because of the amazing clarity of the surrounding water, it is a paradise for underwater photographers and divers wishing to get a close up view.

Nowhere else on earth can you snorkel in an inland lake filled with non-stinging jellyfish. However the waters around Palau offer great opportunities for the diver and snorkeler in the waters off its coast as well. The Blue Corner is THE place to go to snorkel or dive in Palau. Palau is a chain of islands in the western Pacific numbering some 200, lying southeast of the Philippines.
Palau has everything that any diving or snorkel fanatic could ever want; countless shipwrecks, beautiful and healthy coral reefs, sharks and fish, fish, and more fish and sharks! Most people are shocked by the sheer number of fish within this portion of the Pacific. This is an area where three of the world’s major currents come together, so it makes sense that the waters should be so full of these creatures. Within the crystal clear waters the visitor will find a kaleidoscope of over 1,500 species of fish and some 700 types of corals. One can be sure that a visit here will be a trip of a lifetime.

Curacao is a brilliant alternative to the typical Caribbean dive. Part of the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao) Curacao is more reflective of it’s European heritage than many others with names like Willemstad and Christoffelberg.
Curacao once again offers amazing dives and snorkeling opportunities for almost anyone who can don a mask and fins. The important dives off shore include: The Superior Producer, one of the Caribbean’s most beautiful dives, Beacon and Barracuda Point, Snake Bay, Porto Marie the double reef system in Curacao and the not to be missed Mushroom Forest (Watamula). Most of the shore dives lie off the southeast and southwest part of the island, but the two that are truly not to be missed are the Superior Producer and Mushroom Forest.
Superior Producer is a very popular shipwreck off just off Willemstad, which is now totally covered with corals and sponges and surrounded by reef fish and other sea creatures. Sunk in 1977, the wreck is accessible by both shore and boat. However, if you are going to make this dive, it is advised that you have an advanced diving certification and go with a guide. This shipwreck and the Mushroom Forest, provide sanctuary to the barracuda, sea turtles, dolphins, moray eels, groupers, and numerous other sea creatures, which live in this incredibly beautiful part of the world. Aptly named because of hard corals that have grown to look like giant mushrooms, the Mushroom Forest lies just off of Santa Cruz near the northwestern tip of the island. All of this is waiting for the avid sea-explorer.
I have scheduled 3 days on the island of Oahu, before my friend joins me to work on my snorkeling sea legs, so to speak. One snorkel spot is just about 10 miles to the east of Honolulu off the south coast highway, called Hanauma Bay. It is an amazingly beautiful place that has remarkably affordable packages. But first I will be going to the Ko Olina Lagoons because of the calm waters and easy snorkeling.
Maui
Although I will not be going to Maui, I would like to make a trip to the Molokini Crater to snorkel. But we will see how the finances hold out!

When I first learned that the Red Sea was one of the best places to snorkel and dive in the world I could hardly believe what I was reading. But yes, it is always on the list of top spots and one of the most dived places in the Red Sea is the HMS Thistlegorm, in Ras Mohammed. It is not only one of the best sites to dive in the Red Sea, but the best wreck dive in the world. This shipwreck, from WW2, can be found in the Strait of Gubal and is considered a challenging dive therefore is only for advanced divers. There is so much to explore, from tanks to spare parts for cars, that one needs 2 dives to see it all!
Diving the Thistlegorm is great if you also love marine life. The fishes and other creatures in and around the wreck include; barracudas, jacks, turtles, snappers, lionfish and all manner of reef fish. If you love to dive wrecks, this is the place for you!

Half Moon Caye
Like it’s sister island, Half Moon Caye is home to its own bread of birds, the boobies who nest there much of the year. If you are a diving enthusiast, this area will provide plenty of opportunity to see the amazingly diverse habitat in the ocean. The reef off shore is second only to the barrier reed in Australia, but in my experience provides a much clearer and more colorful experience. The marine life is both exotic and breathtakingly beautiful and the waters provide challenges for the skilled diver and safety for the beginner, like me.

Tobago is another place that doesn’t disappoint with regard to diving and snorkeling. Located near South America, Tobago is truly one of the treasures of the Caribbean. The huge profusion of coral and fishes in the area draws not only tourists to dive and snorkel, but to fish as well. The coral reef surrounding the island is one of the best in the area and is home to over one million species of coral and countless varieties of fish including jacks, tarpon, barracuda, tuna, sharks, trigger fish, manta rays, sea turtles, brain and barrel coral.
Buccoo Reef is the largest coral reef in the Tobago waters and consists of 5 reefs divided by channels. Although this system of reefs is for both divers and snorkelers, it is by far more accessible to snorkelers. Among the other popular areas to dive and snorkel are: The Rock, Cove Crack, Majeston, Divers Dream, Flying Reef, Stingray Alley and Ketchup reef.
Flamenco Beach, Culebra, Puerto Rico
The Maldives is at the top of my list for places to snorkel. However, because of it’s prohibitive cost, I will probably never get there in this lifetime. But that doesn’t mean that I cannot window shop! Hanifaru Bay is a in protected marine area, on an uninhabited island in the Baa atoll. By far the smallest area of all those discussed on this page, it is only the size of a football field. Because of its location, the waters collect plankton, which in turn attract whales and manta rays, the area has become one of the hot spots for photographers and video photographers to capture the habits of these huge creatures. Although feeding season is from May to November, the best time to visit is from the end of July to early October.
If you are planning on scuba diving in this area, you will have to look elsewhere as a recent ban has been enforced on the bay to preserve its natural beauty. Not only that, but snorkeling has been restricted in this area as well because of its small size. So if you wish to see Hanifaru Bay, you will have to plan ahead and book your tour early. However, besides the atoll, there are many other areas nearby that one can find brilliant soft corals and schools of reef fish as well as manta and whales on their way to their feast.

Wherever you snorkel in the Caymans you are going to find beauty. There are very few places in the world that will provide so much color and marine life. The Caymans are part of an undersea mountain range and provides a home for thousands of sea creatures. According to the late Jacques Cousteau it is by far the best snorkeling in the world. On a dive or simply snorkeling one can find a wide array of marine creatures including moray eels, stingrays, barracudas, groupers sharks, turtles, silversides, and tarpon gliding just beyond your reach along with brilliant corals, sponges and sea fans decorating the ocean floor. Of all the places that I have snorkeled in the world this is one of my favorites and I agree wholeheartedly with Mr. Cousteau. My sister and her family have made it their second home and vacation there whenever possible.

The Corn Islands are part of the country of Nicaragua. Laying off the Caribbean coast roughly 90 Kilometers east of Bluefields, Big Corn and Little Corn lie amidst an area of great marine biodiversity that any diver or snorkel fanatic will appreciate. There are many spots around these two islands that warrant a close look, some of these include, White Holes, Casa II, Grant's Cave, Jake's Place, Yellowtail, Tarpon Channel, and Turtle, Blowing and Jeff’s Rock. Each has its own special draw and play host to a wide variety of skill levels; some contain tunnels, some are deeper than others, but all contain a wide variety of abundant marine life. On an average day one can see a colorful array of fishes including hammerheads and barracuda, stingrays, puffer fish, eels, innumerable numbers of coral fish and several variety of turtles. One may even spot a bull shark on a good day.

The Virgin Islands is the last of the areas I have to write about. Although there are plenty of other amazing places around the world, one must stop somewhere! St Croix, once again, has a little bit (Or a lot!) of everything for the underwater adventurer. Located 1,100 miles southeast of Miami, St. Croix is the largest of the three US Virgin Islands and is the only place in the Caribbean that one can dive a shipwreck, a wall, a pier and a reef all in the same day.
Marine life is everywhere in St. Croix as well as the other US Virgin Islands, with more than 500 species of fish and 40 some kinds of coral to catch the observant snorkeler and diver’s eye. Schools of wrasses, gobies and tangs join in the undulating dance of sea life that populates this underwater landscape. Among the many other creatures one can find hiding amidst the corals are rays and eels, turtles, octopus and lobsters. Recommended dives include the Butler Bay Wrecks, Salt River Canyon and Buck Island Underwater National Monument. The wrecks can be found all clumped together along St. Croix’s Northwest end with Salt River Canyon close by along its north shore whereas Buck Island Underwater National Monument is found along its western shore.
St John also has many dives that are worth seeing, but at the top of the list are Carval Rock, Eagle Shoals, found on the southeast coast, Tektite, located in Greater Lameshur Bay, Congo Cay is west of Carval Rock and Grass Cay. Areas with sandy bottoms tend to attract stingrays and manta rays as well as sharks. Around the massive growths of corals, one can find barracuda, parrotfish, butterfly fish several varieties of turtles, tarpon, octopus, lobsters and crabs just calling out for the underwater photographer to snap a picture.
If you are one of the fortunate ones to see one of these amazing places, take in every minute, then share your experiences with others that may not be so lucky. I always welcome stories for my blog site and encourage the adventurer in all of you to come out and play!

Some great places to dive and snorkel around Catalina are: Blue Cavern Point, Eagle Rock, Farnsworth Banks, Italian Gardens, Long Point, Rock Quarry, Ship Rock, all around the Two Harbors area, West End Cove and near Little Gibraltar.
I hope to be visiting this site on my way home from the Big Island of Hawaii in October! I will be writing more and updating this site at that time.

Roatan is one of the most pristine places to snorkel and dive in the Caribbean. Part of Honduras, Roatan lies off the coast and because the island is so sparsely inhabited, the diving and snorkeling is absolutely fabulous. One of the most spectacular dives, called Mary’s Place, is found just a few minutes off the Barefoot Diver’s shore, between Coxen Hole and French Harbor. Mary’s Place extends deep into one of the many volcanic crevasses in the area down to about 95 feet and because of its depth, this dive is for the advanced diver only. Within the confines of this crack, one can find the walls swarming with fish and plant life, including black and wire coral, blue barrel sponges, sea fans and turtles, silversides and gobies.
Snorkelers are in for a treat as well. Although Mary’s place is certainly an area that is suited for scuba divers, the surrounding smaller nooks and cracks play host to a whole army of marine creatures as well. This was a favorite of mine and I took many photos during my afternoon swim.
Papua, New Guinea Hotels 4-5
Our trip to Cancun the next year was spectacular and the snorkeling there superb beyond a doubt. One of the best places was Casa It was a cove that allowed fish to come in at high tide and many stayed. This is now my happy place when I am stressed and when I close my eyes I can still see the striped Sergeant Major fish just a hand’s reach in front of me, their yellow and black bodies glinting in the sun. As I drift off, I also remember the crunching sound of the parrotfish biting off bits of coral as I glided past and the barracuda that surprised all of us only a few yards away.
Of all the places in the Caribbean, it would have to be a toss up between the Caymans, playing with the stingrays at Stingray City, the beautiful waters of Roatan, off of Honduras, and Belize. But if I had to pick one, for me Belize topped them all because of its shallow waters, many places for snorkelers to spread out and the guides who were happy to take you on a private side excursion away from the madding crowd for a small tip. I felt safe, was able to take beautiful pictures and I was able to avoid the kicking feet of the person ahead of me. (A mistake that later in Cozumel made fast work of my underwater camera!)
I hope that this overview of some of the places around the world both educates you and encourages you to get out and see the beauty that lies beneath the waves of our planet.

Snorkeling and Diving Packages:
Fiji is known as the soft coral capital of the world and is one of the premier places in which to scuba dive. But Bligh Waters is unequivocally the best place to dive in Fiji. Found between the two main islands of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu the area is the home of liveaboards, limitless marine animals and year round diving. It gets it name from the infamous Captain Bligh of Mutany on the Bounty. The larger of the two islands, Viti Levu, has a reef that skirts the island that runs about 100 km along the south coast. The area is inhabited by incredible marine plant and attracts larger animals that feed on plankton, such as mantas and whales between July and October to breed. The Great Sea Reef, Fiji’s largest, is the third greatest in the world, next to the GBR of Australia and the Belize Reef. Because of the winds and the tides between the islands, this is an area best suited for the experienced scuba diver but not particularly suited for the snorkeler. Its relatively uncrowded sites and unspoiled conditions are a perfect playground for those seeking incredible photos and seeing nature at play.

Once again, I have bitten off more than I can chew, as I have done many times in my life with this post. It had taken me over a month of researching and getting photos of these places together for this post, so I hope that you enjoy it!
I have been fortunate to snorkel some of the best places in the world. I was in port in Belize for only one day on my Carnival Line Cruise, but the impact of the port and the absolute beauty of it’s reef left me dreaming of more just about every night for months. Now nearly seven years later, I am still dreaming of a return trip. That’s how special the snorkeling in that part of the world is.
For some of us, diving is not something that our bodies can handle and we must settle for snorkeling. But the moment I began years ago in Australia, I was hooked. Yes, I tried earlier in Jamaica once, but the skies were dark and the waters choppy and stirred up, so it wasn’t a fair start.

Salt Cay is another place where there are so many varied opportunities that everyone can find something to do. Truly one of the area’s best for diving and snorkeling, the clear waters provide a truly remarkable experience for anyone looking for underwater adventure. Here one can find anything from sharks, manta rays and whales, to barracuda and parrotfish and sea turtles, with too many reef fish in between to mention. Both the scuba and snorkeling are safe around these islands and with a wide range of challenging trips, no one will go home disappointed.

Huahine, is another beautiful island in the cluster and the clear Pacific waters that surround it provide a home for oh so many species of plants and sea creatures. Along with the whales that visit the neighboring isles, sea turtles, stingrays, clownfish and butterfly fish inhabit the lush coral reefs surrounding this island. It is a relatively secluded place for snorkelers, divers and the photographer to spend a day in nirvana.

Champagne Reef, Dominica
Dominica is a beautiful island that has some of the worst beaches of the Caribbean. It is all because of the volcanic activity in the area, which also is what gives the reef its name. Located about 20 minutes from Roseau, the reef is in an area where the gas underneath the earth’s crust finds its way to the surface of the water in much the same way bubbles in a glass of champagne do.
The snorkeling and diving is top notch and among the colorful plants and coral, you can find lobsters, octopus, turtles, sergeant majors, trumpet fish, squid and seahorses and even an occasional canon. The diving along the drop off brings countless views of fish swimming in their coral back yards.

The Great Barrier Reef, or GBR as locals call it, covers more than 134,000 square miles off the east coast of Australia. The Great Barrier Reef is the biggest living organism in the world. Recently, because of global warming and bleaching, the corals have taken a hit, but the science world is working hard to help restore it. While snorkeling or diving one might find several types of turtles, snakes and corals, giant clams and the more than 1,500 types of fish that live within its shelter. Some of the other marine animals that can be encountered while snorkeling include the dugong, eels, manta rays and plenty of sharks. Beware of the jellies in the Queensland area during certain seasons, as they can be deadly, especially the Box Jellies. However, there are certainly others that you need to beware of as well. A few include the Blue Ringed Octopus, sea snake, Rockfish, Portuguese Man of war and Blue Bottle Jellies. The GBR is the only living organism that can be seen from space and because it is so huge, each area of the reef will provide a different experience for the diver and snorkeler, with unique marine life and ocean bottom to explore. I have ridden a horse in the surf off Cape Tribulation and snorkeled the coast of Queensland near Port Douglas, with the Quicksilver and both have been exhilarating experiences, neither of which I will forget.

Oaha
No matter where you go in Hawaii to snorkel, you can never go wrong, as it is a snorkeler lover’s paradise. But it is best to go with a guide if it is rough or you are a novice. Also, a lot of the really good sites are only accessible by boat or guided tour, so you will have to decide what is best for you.
There are many sites on Oahu that one can go to but Makaha Beach Park is the place to go. This site offers something for all skill levels. People who go at Makaha Beach generally go there to see the turtles in their natural habitat, but one can see sergeant majors, tangs, moray eels and various types of corals as well. While snorkeling you will see the humuhumunukunukuapua’a (Hawaii’s state fish), eels, as well as other sea creatures. Although the area for snorkeling is along the mile of beach which makes up Makaha’s Beach Park, scuba divers can find challenges in the caverns that are further off in the bay. The best time to snorkel is in the summer when the weather is calm. Although you can stand up in the chest deep water and see the sea life circle around you, the best chance of spotting something interesting is in the deeper water along the edge of the reef.
The Big Island
Hawaii’s most popular snorkeling spot is in Kealakekua Bay, about 12 miles south of Kailua-Kona on the Kona Coast that you can only get to by boat. This area is the home to a wide array of fish and tropical coral reef including dolphin, manta and eagle rays, parrotfish, octopi, and huge schools of yellow tangs and cowries.
Other prime snorkeling locations on the Big Island are: Kahalu'u Beach Park, Kapa'a Beach Park, Puako Bay, Kiholo Bay, and Pu'uhonua o Honaunau. I am heading to the Big Island in September with a friend and plan to go snorkeling with the manta rays and dolphins. However, there are so many places to snorkel on this big island that I am certain that I will come back with plenty of pictures and videos to upload to this site.

Flamingo Beach is not just an incredibly beautiful beach, but an amazing spot to snorkel as well! Just a short swim into the turquoise waters and the journey begins. The reef in this area has all of the beauty of the Caribbean, with an amazing array of coral and sea life, including manta rays, lobster, turtles, stingrays, and schools of tropical fish. Culebra is Puerto Rico’s smallest island that is inhabited by people, and with the western coast protected from the easterlies, one can spend a whole day snorkeling or diving in the sparkling clear waters.

Found on the island of New Britain, Kimbe Bay is known world wide for its underwater show of brilliant marine life. With almost 200 reefs in and around the Bay, it is a snorkeler’s and diver’s nirvana. The top sites include Christine’s, Susan’s, Emma’s, and Father's Reef, Kimbe Island Bommie, and the Witu Islands. However, the pride of Papau is Emma’s Reef. Divided into North and South Emma, the reef has an incredibly diverse habitat with a cacophony of vibrant corals, hundreds of species of fish including Barracuda, Trevally, Tuna, Hammerheads and others. Approximately seventy percent of all Indo-Pacific marine life can be found in Kimbe Bay and is known worldwide as one of the most famous underwater spots for photographers.

Although Mabul is very small compared to others mentioned on this page, it is known as one of the premier diving sites in the world because of its unique and interesting marine life. Paradise 1 and 2 are very popular among the tour companies along with the other dive sites of Eel Garden, Lobster Wall, Nudibranch Center, Panglima Reef, Gurnard Point, and Ray Point, but the Paradise sites are by far the best. On a dive one can expect to see plenty of marine life including gobies, octopi shrimp, eels, lobsters, rays, cuddlefish, nudibranchs, coral and plenty of other small, unique sea creatures that call this home.

Snorkeling and Diving Packages:
In Australia, back in 1988, when I was in Queensland, I decided that being in that area meant a obligatory trip out to the Outer Reef to see Australia’s beloved Great Barrier Reef. We set out from Port Douglas on the Quicksilver for the journey. Unfortunately, I wasn’t yet savvy with oceans, and being another rough day I quickly became seasick. They put out quite a spread, and even though I downed ice chips and ginger tablets, I was forced to pass on lunch, (which included some of my favorite seafood by the way) and was forced to lie down until it passed. After a while, I was able to go aboard a submarine and view the marine life through portholes in its sides. I remember a couple of small squids shooting by my window and a giant clam on the floor of the ocean. I pushed through the rest of the seasickness I was then experiencing to have ½ hour of wonderful snorkeling off the side of the ship’s platform. That was it and I was hooked! Now, I know better and modern medicine has caught up with those of us with squeamish stomachs with the seasick patch. The last trip that I took was seasick free.
The second time that I went snorkeling was many years later off the Dominican Republic in Punta Cana. It was another adventure that I would never care to repeat. We were taken by boat out to some areas good for both snorkeling and diving, and left us off for about 45 minutes. Time slipped away from me as I was mesmerized by the marine life and the ocean itself and as I was the only one snorkeling, I decided that it was time to get back on board. I lifted my head up and to my surprise, I was quite a distance from the boat. The water was choppy with winds stirring up swells and I began to panic, as I could not keep my head above water. I began to yell for help. Finally, what seemed like an eternity, (and was in all probability a few minutes) I was thrown a line from the boat and was pulled aboard. I was told to lie down to get my wind back. But after lunch, I was back at it nearer to shore, only this time with a vest on. I learned that no matter how good of a swimmer you are when in new waters, always wear a safety vest! I have never gone without one since.

Whether you are snorkeling or diving the cenotes of Mexico, it is always a memorable experience. I was fortunate to snorkel some cenotes north of Tulum, as they can be found all over the Riviera Maya between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. However I never knew about the Gran Cenote until I studied it for my travel certificate. This cavern is one of the most popular sites in the Riviera Maya and draws people from all over the world. Gran Cenote is a favorite of both snorkelers and divers, but only advanced divers can dive down and explore the stalagmites, columns, stalactites, and tunnels found in this system of inter-connected of caves. This is a unique eco system of more than 300 miles that provides both snorkelers and divers alike with something that is totally unique in the world of water adventure.

This is a country that I have gushed about before. Belize has one of the best reefs in the world, next to the Great Barrier Reef off of Australia, unfortunately becoming the top as the Land Down Under is quickly losing its reef to global warming and bleaching...As I have already stated, I have been fortunate to have snorkeling in Belize, but unfortunately it was far too short for my taste, only wetting my appetite for more. The thing that I remember mostly about my snorkeling adventure was the brilliant color of all the marine life: the coral, the purple sea fans, innumerable reef fish and the relative ease of snorkeling because of the relatively even lay of the ocean floor. The Belize Reef is about 185 miles long with more than 400 islands and is the second largest in the world.
Laughing Bird Caye is a snorkeler’s heaven, according to most people who have been there. (And I wholeheartedly agree!) The Caye can be found about 11 miles from Placencia Village and located in the south part of Belize. Along with being a perfect snorkel spot, it is a paradise for the serious diver as well. Some of the best places to snorkel or dive around Placencia include; Gladden Spit Marine Reserve, Silk Cayes Canyon, Laru Beya, Placencia Outer Reef, and the world famous Blue Hole.
The laughing gulls, which give the caye its name, visit the island once and year to mate. They share the surrounding waters with a spectrum of reef fish including trumpet fish, barracuda, angelfish, blue tangs and sergeant majors, the larger stingrays, manatee and dolphin. These marine fish and animals find food and shelter among the various corals, including elkhorn and staghorn and provide refuge for other crustaceans that roam the sea floor
One of the reasons why this area has remained so pristine is that it was declared a protected area 1981 and on 1996 it was placed on the World Heritage list with Laughing Bird Caye National Park as the primary site.

The Bimini Islands are a series of islands that lie about 50 miles from Miami, but over 100 from Nassau. These islands include North and South Bimini and a handful of smaller islands and cays and are surrounded by an area that has it all for anyone who enjoys diving, snorkeling or photography, regardless of skill level or interest.
When diving the many sites around Bimini, the following sites are always found at the top of the list; Rainbow and Victory Reefs, Moray and Tuna Alleys, The Road to Atlantis, Little Caverns, The Strip, Turtle Rock and the Continental Shelf. On virtually any afternoon one can expect to encounter a smorgasbord of reef fish including Angelfish, Parrotfish, Peacock Flounder, grunts, grouper, and Trumpet fish darting in and around the exquisite colors of hard and soft corals. Other larger inhabitants of the reef include various rays and sharks. An observant diver can spot lobsters, octopus, crabs and eels hiding in the cracks and holes of the reefs.
Those who like to dive shipwrecks are in for a treat in Bimini as the area is filled with carcasses of old ships sunk during the 19th and 20th century, but mostly from the later part of the 1900’s. The Sapona, also known as a Liberty ship, and The Bimini Barge, are just two of the sites one can expect to find in the waters around Bimini that will provide the shipwreck diver a one in a lifetime thrill.

Catalina Island is one of eight channel-islands 22 miles off the mainland of San Pedro and the coast of southern California. It reminds me a bit of Mackinac Island in Wisconsin, as cars are banned, and the atmosphere heralds back to a much simpler time. Santa Catalina really has it all for those who want to be restored by both land and water. Not only is the island inviting, the waters are teaming with marine life and there are shipwrecks for the more experienced divers to explore.
Around the island one can find giant forests of kelp everywhere hiding predators such as bat and torpedo rays. Mantis shrimp, octopus and moray eels lurk in holes among the coral or lie in wait for lunch to pass by. Angel, horn and leopard sharks scour the area, while sea fans, kelp and coral decorate the floor. Slower creatures, such as nudibranchs, sea cucumbers, anemones, sea urchins lie in the depths, as do the quicker moving hermit crabs, and spiny lobsters. A beautiful cacophony of fish including the garibaldi, sheephead, colorful gobies, jack mackerel, yellowtail giant sea bass, and butterfly fish are constant company for the marine and photo enthusiast alike. Harbor seals, which can be found in the shallower waters, meet and bid the visitor a fond adieu.

Along with Belize, this country is on the top of my bucket list. Menjangan is a snorkel and diving paradise for both the beginning and advanced adventurer. It’s clear, calm waters and abundant fishes have led Discovery Channel to rate it the third in the world for snorkeling. However, the 30 to 60 meter drops along the wall, with its abundant sea life and coral, allow those who are looking for a beautiful, yet challenging wall dive as well. Here, because the water is so crystal clear and the deep dives so inviting, you will have to watch out for decompression sickness. Just take it easy and do not travel for 24 as recommended. The best beaches to snorkel from in Bali are Padangbai (East Bali), Nusa Lembongan (Nusa Islands), Menjangan Island and Pemuteran (North Bali) , Nusa Dua (Nusa Dua), and Amed and Tulamben (East Bali).

Found in the South Pacific, it is home to the SS President Coolidge at Espiritu Santo, the Star of Russia at Port Vila and Million Dollar Point at Espiritu Santo along with a whole host of fishes and marine life. Of these three wrecks, the SS President Coolidge is by far the most captivating and famous. The Coolidge and the Star of Russia are shipwrecks, but Million Dollar Point is an area of collected wreckage from WWII that is perfect for the curious. All three sites are home to corals, reef fish, barracuda eels and turtles. If you are a wreck diver, this is one place that will provide many days of interesting dives!
Laughing Bird Caye
One of the most beautiful of the Islands in Belize, this Isle is located 11 miles off short from Southern Belize and is one of the most ideal places for scuba diving and snorkeling. The island gets its name from the laughing gulls, which inhabit the island. Another aquatic paradise, the waters are home to sea turtles, sting rays, eel, grouper, parrot fish lobsters, crabs and barracudas. Between the marine and plant life, and the beauty of the land, this should be on the top of every snorkeler’s and diver’s list.

Although I have never been there, Jost Van Dyke seems like it would be a bit like snorkeling or diving off some of the smaller isles of the Belize Reef; relaxed, personal and accessible. Whether you are someone who dives every year, or it has been seven years since your last splash in the surf with fins, like myself, Jost Van Dyke and Little Jost will make all your snorkel and scuba dreams come true. Caribbean marine life abounds in the ocean waters surrounding these two islands, with a wide array of reef fish, crabs, lobsters, rays, dolphins, turtles, hiding among the corals and sea fans and whales sounding their presents to all. Jost Van Dyke has something to challenge all skill levels with its caves, wrecks, and walls and the availability to snorkel off the shore.

Snorkeling and Diving Packages:
While researching Costa Brava, I have gained a better appreciation for Spain, and the beauty of the waters surrounding it. L'Estartit, a part of the Medes Islands ecosystem off the coast, is classified as one of the best natural reserves in the Mediterranean. (One that I certainly plan to snorkel in years to come.) The area provides great diving and snorkeling experiences for all levels because of its varied terrain, as well as caves and tunnels for the advanced. Some of the most notable of these include the Sardina, Vaca, and Dorf Nord caves and the Pedrosa tunnel. Within range of the islands one can dive the Reggio Messina, a ship sunk in the later part of the 20th century. The area is brilliantly colored with coral, seaweed and fish including mullets, sea bass, moray eels, octopus, lobster, starfish, barracuda, grouper, bream, as well as a myriad of other coral fish. There are a number of videos on the internet that speak to the beauty of the ocean majesty of this place.
