SHARK DIVING

Swimming with sharks is dangerous at best, unless it is with nurse or whale sharks. But swimming with others such as blue sharks or other dangerous types can involve some careful maneuvering in the water. Some expeditions use cages to protect their customers but others such as some expeditions out of Africa invite you to swim right with these carnivores without anything between you and them but water and a wet suit.

WHITE WATER RAFTING

White water rafting is a white knuckled, heart-pounding race from beginning to end. First tried on the Zambezi River in 1981, it has been broken down since into five grades of rapids, with five being the highest. One of the most well known spots in the U.S. to try this is down the Colorado River, but hang on to your raft, for there are lots of rocks, waterfalls, and rapids!

BOBSLEDDING/LUGE/SKELETON

Everyone in snow country went out after the Olympics and made a bobsled run when they were little. We had ours in our back yard on the hill where our garage eventually was built. So who wouldn’t want to zoom down an ice covered track on a sled as an adult? This sport will allow one to go at speeds of up to 90 mph. But be aware, this is another unforgiving sport with only a helmet and the bobsled to protect you.

Luge and skeleton provide no shelter, as there is no protection from crashes except your helmet. It is the closest thing to getting on that sled when you were young and taking your chances down a hill.

DOG SLEDDING

ZIP-LINING

Zip lines are usually part of an eco-tour and allow the rider to see the scenery from the tree level or above. The passenger is suspended in a harness from a line suspended above the ground that is on a decline. After the ride has begun, the rider streaks down the zip line reaching speeds of up to 50 miles per hour and up to 600 feet above the ground! Definitely an adrenaline rush!

SKIING

There are three different types of skiing. Downhill or Alpine Skiing involves being pulled to the top of a hill usually via a ski lift and making your way down by traversing the hill through the powder, Nordic that involves cross-country and ski jumping, and Telemark, which involves racing with special skis that have detached heels. BOULDERING

Bouldering is a form of rock climbing that uses small rock formations and boulders to climb in. The climber generally uses no harness or ropes, but does use specialized shoes and chalk for the hands to secure hand and footholds, and a bouldering mat to prevent injuries. Coasteering is another multi-disciplinary sport that involves climbing, swimming, diving, scrambling, diving and walking. Snorkeling with stingrays at Stingray City in the Caymans was just as amazing. Once we had gotten out to where they were, the stingrays danced and played around us for about 45 minutes. Sliding through my hands, they felt like the wet chamois that I had used in throwing clay pots. My biggest regret of the day was a dead battery just as we got in the water. So my amazing memories had to remain in my head.

Snorkeling has been by far the most exhilarating and freeing sport I have ever tried and is something I can continue to do despite my age and health issues. I have snorkeled the Great Barrier Reef, the Belize Reef, Roatan, Cozumel, Grand Cayman, several places in Mexico, (One that is now my "happy place".) the Dominican Republic and I will be in Hawaii on Oahu and the Big Island in 5 weeks. My October travel blog will be devoted to my experiences there with my bestie Linda Alcorn.

I don’t know how safe this is, but if you are hooked on the rush of adrenaline, this might be at the top along with bungee jumping. Hang gliding is probably the closest thing to soaring like a bird that one can find. This type of “plane” involves an open harness with no motor to propel it. LAND SAILING OR SAND YACHTING

If you are a fan of sailing but afraid of the water, you may like this sport. Sand yachting aka land sailing has been around for a long time, hundreds of years in fact. But the modern version is still a thrill a minute. Sand yachts are wheeled vehicles with a sail to catch the wind. Usually used in a flat area such as a beach or salt flats, sand yachts are part of competitions around the world.

I am not what one might consider an adrenaline junkie. Far from it. Although I have never been drawn toward the risky sports or activities, I have taken part in some of the lesser, more adventurous ones when I was younger. In my teens and twenties, I enjoyed water skiing, body surfing, mountain climbing, downhill skiing, and in my 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and now 60’s it has been exclusively snorkeling. I have considered ziplining, but until they can make a patch that can calm my fear of heights or reverse the aging process, I won’t be attempting it any time soon or in this lifetime for that matter!

However, travel is for making memories and one of my best memories was the day our German Semester Abroad group caught a cable car and took off for the top of the Untersberg Mountain, which is just outside of Salzburg and decided to walk down. The hike took us two hours and included paths through mountain peaks, 45-degree grades down hill through brush and trees, cliffs hundreds of feet high, with ropes to hold onto and breathtaking views. When we finally reached the bottom, I remember the rush of excitement (yes, and adrenalin) and pride I felt for what I had just accomplished.

SNORKELING - SEE MY BLOG POST FROM APRIL 2017

Snorkeling is the greatest sport on the planet, for me at least. It allows me to visit my favorite place; the beach and see the beauty of nature. The fish and soft coral of the sea perform a united dance as the rhythmic movements of the waves urge them along. WATERSKIING

This is something that most everyone can try. I was introduced to it when I was about 5 years of age and watched as my uncle and his friend skied on a local lake. Later, I enjoyed in on the bay side of Lake Michigan with friends. It involves being pulled by a towrope by a speedboat. So if you have strong leg and arm muscles and enjoy water on a sunny day, this sort of trip might be interesting to you.

DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKING

This sport is for the serious biker. So if you are one that likes to get your adrenaline high on a bike, take a van, cable car, or plane to the top of a mountain and fly down over rocks and tree roots, and past trees. If you are less advanced, take the road down, it will still give you a thrill a minute!

BIG WAVE BODYBOARDING

Body boarding is one of the fastest growing extreme sports around. It is a type of wave surfing, but rather than using a surfboard, one uses a rectangular shaped piece of foam. WINGSUIT SKY DIVING

Remember watching Rocky and Bullwinkle when you were young? To me this experience is somewhat akin to being a human flying squirrel, thus its nickname flying squirrel suit, bat suit and winged birdman suit. The winged suit design allows one to jump out of a plane and creates lift that allows a person to glide through the heavens until the specialized parachute is deployed.

ADVENTURE OR EXPEDITION RACING

Adventure racing is a multi-disciplinary team sport in which wilderness is traversed. The race can run from 2 hours to 2 weeks and can include abseiling, trekking, mountain biking, white water rafting, skiing, climbing and horseback riding. Teams can range from 2 to 5 members, but the average is 4. So if one sport is not enough to fill your adventure needs and you are a competitor, this may just fit!

SURFING

Surfing is a general term; big wave surfing is the extreme version. But for most of us who do not know how to even stand on a board, this can be adventure enough. Surfing was born in the Polynesian Island and involves standing and balancing on a long board while riding the crest of a wave. I will be in Hawaii in just 5 weeks, September 26 through October 10. If I even learn to stand on one at the edge of the ocean at 61 years of age, I will be happy!

Once again this sport originated with surfing. It is a sport that uses a finless board that is smaller and skims along the surface of the ocean near the shore. This sport begins at the beach and catches the remaining wash of the previous wave, then catches the last of the wave as it comes in to shore.

I wasn’t even aware that this was available until just this past summer when researching attractions in Sydney, Australia. In Wisconsin, the snowmobile and ski trails are bustling with people enjoying the sport on a clear, sunny day. I have only done this once in my life when I was young. INLINE SKATING

I have loved both roller skating and ice skating since I was little. (I was actually a member of the National Figure Skating Association for 3 years in my twenties.) Because inline skating is a combination of both, it has been a dream of mine to try it one day.

Inline skating affords the skater faster speeds than roller skating because of its design. There are several disciplines of this type of skating as well. These include vert skating, aggressive inline, freestyle skating, hockey, speed skating, roller soccer and off-road skating, all challenging in themselves. Downhill skiing and waterskiing have always been done in my own backyard and although my experiences with these haven’t included trips, many are from other areas and do not have the easy access to them that we do. Wisconsin and Minnesota are known for their cold, crisp winters, soft winter snow and beautiful clear lakes. Wisconsin’s Door County is a place where people come from all corners of the globe to see the beautiful shoreline, spend the weekends in the camping and participate in outdoor sports.

Body surfing in California would have been enough in itself, but bodysurfing at the famous Laguna Beach was beyond anything I could ask for at the age of 25. However, it would have been better if I had done some research on how to body surf before doing it as I and the other took a digger in the end and wound up with about a cup of sand in my suit and a very strained back… Lesson learned.

LONGBOARDING

A longboard is a variation on a skateboard, but generally longer. It originated from surfing when surfers wished to bring their sport to land. Longboards are mostly used for downhill racing and travel, but can be used in tricks as well. When racing downhill, the longboard can reach speads of up to 50 miles per hour.

BUNGEE JUMPING

I remember watching the beginnings of bungee jumping on National Geographic when I was young. The natives would jump from high platforms in a ritualistic ceremony on the islands of Vanuatu, a short distance from New Caledonia. These land divers would tie a cord to their ankles, and after jumping headfirst, just miss the ground.

Now that the sport has taken off, one can find bungee jumping around the world. But one of the best spots is still the land of the Ni-Vanuatu in the area of Oceania.

BIG MOUNTAIN SKIING/SNOWBOARDING

Whichever way you can get to the top of a ungroomed, snow covered mountain and ride the virgin powder to the bottom, that’s what is involved in big mountain skiing and snowboarding. Although this is still a pricey adventure, it is heaps less than space travel. Zero gravity flight occurs when a jet defies the laws of gravity when it plunges through space allowing its passengers to float for a short period of time. Truly once in a lifetime adventure.

Bossaball is a very new team sport that originated in Spain and involves elements of volleyball, football, gymnastics, and uses a trampoline. It is played on an inflated mat and incorporates music, sport and positive vibrations into a game. In the 12 years since being introduced it has become popular in the Western European, Middle Eastern and some South American Countries. Other than the one site below, I was not able to find any companies specializing in these tours. Although it is catching on in many countries, one may have to wait a few years for the travel companies to catch on!

JET POWERED FLIGHT

Flying a jet is the most exhilarating experience in air flight today and one of the best places to see jets and any other flying aircraft is in Oshkosh, Wisconsin during July at the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Convention. Though this type of flying is pricey, the rush and excitement can be well worth the extra cost. I remember when I was young living on a landing path to a local airport, we often heard the crash of a jet breaking the sound barrier. Though this is no longer legal, riding in a jet and being able to share in this thrill still leaves us in awe.

SANDBOARDING

Sandboarding is akin to snowboarding, only using sand as a base. Generally this is done on a sand dune with a waxed board strapped to the feet. It is not as popular as snowboarding because snowboarders have a ski lift. There is no way to build a lift on a sand dune. But if you love the sun and hotter climates, go for it and try sandboarding.

STREET LUGE

Also called land or road luge, this sport relies heavily on gravity and is done on a street luge board. Street luge is done on a paved surface and only the rider’s weight to steer and feet to stop. SKYDIVING

I have often said that in order to get me to skydive, one would have to knock me out and strap me to a tandem diver. But some love the rush of jumping out of a plane and free diving until their tandem diver pulls their ripcord and they both float to the ground. One of my closest friends did this with her son for her 50th birthday. Kudos to them for their zest for life!

SCUBA DIVING – SEE MY BLOG POST FROM APRIL 2017

CLIFF DIVING

One of the things on my bucket list is to go down to Mexico and watch the cliff divers in Acapulco. These divers are special. We are not talking about the five or ten foot dives your local pool has, but the high dives like in the Olympics or higher. These divers have been diving probably since they were very small and have built up their strength, skill and knowledge of the sport as they have matured. But if you are tired of your normal diving routine and need a new venue and adrenaline boost, give cliff diving a try.
