When I began to write this month's blog on the beautiful countries around our world, I had grand dreams of covering everything in one month. What WAS I thinking!😖 With over 200 countries calling our names to visit, I was biting off much more than even I could chew! So I decided to cut it into thirds, covering the Americas, Mexico, Greenland, and the Caribbean this month, Europe, the Middle East and Africa in October, and Asia and Oceana in November.
While researching, I was stunned by the absolutely incredible beauty on our planet, especially in countries I had a steriotypical impression of because of schooling (or lack thereof) in America. Some of the biggest surprises were Croatia, Canada, and French Polynesia. Did you know that Mexico has a "Grand Canyon" too, called Copper Canyon, and that Patagonia is truly one of the last untouched places on earth? True, there are places you cannot throw a stone without hitting something incredibly beautiful, like the Caribbean Islands and French Polynesia, and others, like Suriname and Syria, you might have to search a bit because of the unrest. However, nearly every place in the world has its own special type of natural beauty. With that in mind, I have used a five star rating system for each country with five stars being the top and one star the lowest.
Although I haven't traveled to as much of my own country as some of my friends, I have been to more than half of the states and lived in four for some time. (California, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Colorado.) The states of Colorado, Florida, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Hawaii are my favorites because of their stunning features, but there is so much of our states I haven't seen, that my favorites list is still wide open.
My first travel adventure was as an eight year old with my parents and my two brothers. We spent our nights in a pop-up tent which we dragged behind us for two weeks. We lived on Dinty Moore Beef Stew, Kool-aide and Jiffy Pop popcorn. Our journey took us from Wisconsin, down to Iowa, through the states of Nebraska, Arizona, Wyoming, Utah, then up through North and South Dakota, and Minnesota on the trip back to Wisconsin. During this time, we took in Mount Rushmore, Jackson Hole Wyoming, Yellowstone, The Painted Desert, A concert in the Mormon Tabernacle, we panned for gold, and saw various other sites. But the thing I remembered the most was the mountains and how awestruck I was when I first saw them. I was hooked! What had first begun with a National Geographic special on the Watusi Dancers when I was 5, became forever embedded in my mind with this trip: I was born to travel. Alhough it took me until my Junior year of college to begin to implement that dream on my own, I have been pursuing it with a single-mindedness ever since.

My sister and I went to Jamaica in 1985 after we had saved up enough to travel. During our trip we visited Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls, 7 Mile Beach in Negril, Kingston Town, the Green Grotto, and the Blue Mountains. Although Jamaica has its problem areas, what struck me the most beside the intensity of the sun was the unrelenting beauty of the water and the lushness of the forested areas. It was a trip that left us both wanting more of the Caribbean.
My next vacation in the Americas was many years later with a significant other when I was introduced to the Dominican Republic and reintroduced to snorkeling. We spent our time in Punta Cana in an all-inclusive, but that didn't stop us from venturing out to explore the island and the waters around us. Thankfully this became a yearly event with our friends and we visited Riviera Maya in Mexico soon afterwards. The snorkeling and diving in places like Tulum and the cenyotes was beyond description and left us in awe. (It still is one of my favorite spots to snorkel!) The following year a trip back to the Dominican Republic allowed us to see everything we missed the first time with a visit to caves and an educational retreat one that would make any nature lover druel.
A few years later, a much needed spring break took me to the Western Caribbean islands of Roatan, Caymans, Belize and Cozumel on board one of the Carnival Cruises. It allowed me the chance to see several places and experience the cultures of each place for a day and placed Belize and the Caymans on the top of my list of Caribbean Islands to revisit. Roatan is a sure fit for those who enjoy unspoiled nature, and although diving and snorkeling is their best attraction at the present time, I believe that island tourism will eventually catch up. Belize and the Caymans both took my breath away (My sister visits the Caymans with her family whenever she can!) and I would recommend each to anyone who likes to snorkel, dive, lie in the sun or just enjoy island beauty. I will be heading back to the Caymans with her and her family in 2019 for a week to walk the Mastic Trail, get my pictures of the stingrays, enjoy the beautiful beaches and enjoy the rum drinks of course.
In 3 short weeks, I will be heading off to Hawaii on yet another adventure to meet my Australian friend in Honolulu, where we will be whisked off to the Big Island for 8 days of relaxing, snorkeling and enjoying the beauty of the island. I have a feeling I will become fall in love with the place and never want to return, as I did in Australia. Stay tuned for an update. Catch the story of my travel under the travel section of my blog!
Until then, Ciao! 😎
